Arnolfo (Vito Cesaro) decides to marry the young Agnese (Matilde Brandi), who has been raised and educated from childhood in the deepest naivety and simplicity. Arnolfo is convinced that only educated, cultured, and worldly women are capable of betraying a man, despite his friend Crisaldo (Claudio Lardo) trying in vain to dissuade him. To ensure her innocence, Arnolfo keeps Agnese confined under the watchful eyes of two trusted servants, Alano (Alfredo Crisci) and Giorgina (Gerardina Tesauro). However, Agnese is so naive and simple that she cannot even comprehend the idea of betrayal. Ironically, it is this very innocence that leads her into the arms of another man, Orazio (Christian Salicone), as she falls for him purely and "simply" out of love.

If adapted to our modern times, this story could be seen as a wonderful romantic comedy where love triumphs over everything, as a genuine and visceral emotion, free from intellectual complications.
